NATO will continue to pursue its goals: to stop the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and ensure the Kosovars can return to their homes in peace and security. NATO is prepared to suspend its air strikes once Belgrade has unequivocally accepted the five key conditions set down by the North Atlantic Council for a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

NATO will continue to support all attempts at a diplomatic solution which respect these conditions. Cop cars followed us in the streets. There were reports of raids on other hostels and the homes of march organizers in the days leading up to the summit. All this enforcement made me nervous. I had participated in several protests — even organized sit-ins and actions myself — but this was my first time attending one on this scale. It made me think of those WTO protesters, but it also reminded me of the police reaction to protests in the Philippines.

The tens of thousands of people in the Seattle streets were joined by people in communities around the world. I have heard about a few of them--taking over an airline terminal, confrontations with police, small demos with a couple of dozen people--and all of them are important.

Two dozen people who care enough to pass out flyers to holdiay shoppers have involved themselves enough to begin creating a community network which, when linked to other local networks, can evolve into a movement.

Protesters had met with police, and both sides thought they had secured ground rules for a peaceful event. Indeed, as order disintegrated, police famously chased a crowd of demonstrators into the nearby Capitol Hill neighborhood. Local residents who had nothing to do with the protests got caught up in the discord.

They were pepper sprayed. They were beaten. It happened!
