I think it might be the serpent as well I can't think of what else it would be. That's true, the way Drinian falls I mean, maybe they crashed into a rock, or maybe they just arrived on a beach and didnt see that they were approaching it which would be awkward.. I may be wrong about this, but I don't think it's the dragon. Certainly not Dragon-Eustace. Because, if you listen very carefully, Edmund is shouting out to Eustace, looking behind him. It is unclear exactly what Ed is saying, but the "Eustace" part is almost definitely there.
As for what I think it is, I think it's the serpent. I will reject your reality and substitute it with my own, because eternity is an awfully long time to be wrong. I think he's talking to the human Eustace The bang could be that Eustace as a dragon was thrown into the ships side during the battle with the serpent or the serpent trying to knock over the Dawn Treader. I really don't know. Whatever it is it's still going to be good!
